The Federal Government plans to initiate the payment of N25,000 grants to members of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) included in the expanded National Social Register of the Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) scheme.
VerseNews reports that this decision, in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to labor leaders, was announced by the Minister for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Betta Edu, during a meeting with the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC).
The President had pledged N25,000 for 15 million households for three months, with a focus on vulnerable pensioners.
Dr. Edu urged the NLC to expedite the collation of data for potential beneficiaries to enable them to start receiving the CCT payments, potentially beginning in November.
In response, the NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, commended the poverty alleviation initiatives and emphasized the importance of addressing the root causes of poverty, suggesting a focus on job creation and a productive economy.
