Senate President, Godswill Akpabio

VerseNews gathered that on Wednesday, August 7, 2023, a video clip trended on social media where the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, was heard at the adjournment of plenary on the floor of the Senate that the assembly clerk will disburse money to accounts of senators for them to enjoy the holiday.

In his word, “In order for us to enjoy our holidays, a token has been sent to our various accounts by the Clark of the National Assembly.”

Perhaps, Akpabio was unaware that the plenary which was the confirmation of ministerial nominees was being transmitted live on national television stations and on notice he quickly withdrew the statement without shame.

He made it worse by withdrawing the statement and tried to fool the watching public but Nigerians of late being one of the smartest group of race on the planet unleash criticisms, accusations on the Senate President, the Senators and the current crop of political office holders in the country.

Akpabio’s announcement to him and his cohorts was perhaps an error on their thinking but it was divinely orchestrated by God to expose who these politicians who claim they are representing us in the National Assembly are.

Recall in mid July, barely a month after the 10th Assembly was inaugurated lawmakers in both the red and the green chambers proposed N110 billion budget which will be spent on acquisition of 465 exotic and bulletproof cars for members and principal officials (N40 billion) while N70 billion for the 306 new lawmakers.

In essence, N40 billion will be spent on acquisition of 465 exotic and bulletproof while N70 billion for the 306 new lawmakers.

Although, there is no official figure how much these senators will be receiving as enjoyment allowances but there’s no doubt that this money will be running to tens of billions of naira.

This sparked outrage from Nigerians condemning this scandalous and corrupt intent of our politicians.

Although, in reaction, SERAP in a statement issued on its official X account, formerly known as Twitter, said it will proceed to the court to sue the Senate President.

“We’re suing the Senate President Godswill Akpabio over the alleged payments of “holiday allowances” by the Clerk of the National Assembly into the “various accounts” of senators while some 137 million poor Nigerians face severe economic hardship,” SERAP stated.

It is prove that these lifetime politicians lacked the sympathy that to detect the current economic hardship the masses are going through since the removal of subsidy on fuel.

It is a shame that since these senators cannot legislate a bill that at every given number of years workers salaries should be reviewed upward but it is only when they’re forced.

A perfect example was the struggle the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) wants to bring the government to its knees to implement the N35,000 minimum wage.

It is more than two months now since subsidy was removed from fuel, the Federal Government is still finding it difficult to increase worker’s salary despite series of meetings, engagements and talks with the NLC and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) but the 108 senators who claim they are representing us with a snap of their fingers approved sharing of money among themselves.

These are politicians without pity, empathy, sympathy and concern whose hearts and minds have been blinded by corruption. This is shameful and disgraceful on these disgraceful for not first considering the welfare of the people.

It is an insult on those who came out en mase to cast their votes under the hot scorching sun for hours on February 25, 2023 during the presidential and national assembly elections.

This brazen comment by Senator Akpabio should awaken a majority of Nigerian voters to keep an eye on these politicians whose aim is not for the wellbeing of the masses but for themselves.
