Nasir El-Rufai resigned from APC, citing failed leadership and abandoned ideals, and joined SDP to push for true progressive values.
His defection signals a major political shift ahead of 2027.
Former Kaduna State Governor and APC founding member, Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, has resigned from the ruling party, citing its abandonment of core progressive principles.
VerseNews gathered that the former Governor accused the APC leadership of sidelining internal structures, disregarding members, and betraying the values that once defined the party. Now a member of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), he aims to build an alternative political movement ahead of the 2027 elections.
El-Rufai, a key figure in APC’s formation in 2013, announced his departure in a statement on March 10, 2025. He expressed frustration over the party’s leadership, saying he had repeatedly raised concerns about its “disturbing trajectory” for two years, but his warnings were ignored.

“For two years, I’ve raised concerns about APC’s troubling direction, but the leadership refuses to listen,” he stated. He lamented that the party had “castrated its organs,” sidelined members, and no longer represented the vision that brought diverse political blocs together.
Declaring his resignation immediate, El-Rufai formally withdrew from the APC in Kaduna State, citing the SDP’s commitment to true progressive ideals.
Calling on supporters to join him, he framed his defection as part of a broader movement to provide Nigerians with a credible alternative. His exit raises questions about APC’s cohesion and sets the stage for major political realignments ahead of 2027.
