There is palpable tension as suspected gunmen killed the Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ife/Akpodim/Chokoneze Ward, Ezinihitte Mbaise council area, Imo State, Smith Chiedoziem Anyanwu.
According to a source from the community who spoke to VerseNews, Anyanwu was shot dead by the hoodlums operating on a motorcycle.
The source further revealed that on getting to his house, the gunmen who called out his name requested to see him.
His wife not suspecting anything, called him out that some people wanted to see him.
Immediately he was identified by his assailants, the source said, he was shot before his wife and stayed for some minutes to be sure he was dead before they flee from the scene.
A community source, who pleaded anonymity, said, “The PDP ward chairman was shot around 8:59 pm by gunmen who gained access into his residence which doubled as his business premises on Thursday
“The gunmen were said to have rode on a motorbike to the house of the PDP chairman. On arrival, they met his wife and asked her for her husband.
“As soon as they sighted and identified him, they fired several shots at him and left only when they confirmed he had taken his last breath.
“The development has brought an uneasy calm within the fold of the PDP in the state. The slain party chairman was vibrant. Nobody knew why he was killed.”

All efforts made to reach the Imo State Police Public Relations Officer, Henry Okoye, proved abortive as he did not take his calls nor respond to the message sent to him.
