In a statement issued by Obiora Ifoh, National Publicity Secretary, Labour Party, seen by VerseNews, it was alleged that the attack was carried out by police officers and thugs sponsored by the state government.

According to the statement, the state chairman of the party, Barrister Callistus Ihejiagwa immediately alerted the public of the atrocities committed by the sponsored armed thugs and police officers.

“At the early hours of today, Monday 28 August, the Imo state Secretariat of the Labour Party has once more been attacked by the police and thugs allegedly by the directives of the state government,” Ifoh stated.

According to Ifoh, the SOS sent by the state chairman, Barr Ihejiagwa, accused the State Governor, Hope Uzodimma of being responsible for the attack based on what he said he was told by the attackers that they were sent by the governor.

The attackers according to the state chairman specifically stated that they were sent to destroy the billboards of their presidential candidate, Peter Obi and the party’s governorship candidate, Senator Athan Achonu.

The SOS read, “IMO STATE LABOUR PARTY OFFICE IN OWERRI UNDER SERIOUS ATTACK BY HOPE UZODINMA LED THUGS AND POLICEMEN.
THEY ARE PRESENTLY DEMOLISHING STRUCTURES IN OUR SECRETARIAT.
PLEASE LET THE ENTIRE WORLD HEAR THIS AND COME TO OUR AID.”

“We have been invaded by the thugs and policemen under the directives of Hope Uzodinma, they have pulled down all our flags, pulled down the banners of Peter Obi, pulled down the banners of our governorship candidate, seized People’s phone, beat people up, and committed all manners of atrocities just now in our office.”

“They were instructed to target Obi’s billboard everywhere in the city. One of the assaulted members of the party is presently hospitalized after the brutality meted at us. We are calling on the whole world to hear our predicament and come to our aid. The government is now hounding every opposition element in the state,” the state party chairman Ihejiagwa said.

The National Publicity Secretary however noted that the attack might be as response to the unprecedented attendance by the supporters of the Labour Party during when Peter Obi including Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti members of the National Assembly of the party to formally inaugurate the governorship campaign of the party’s candidate, Senator Achonu.
