The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed that it has launched an internal investigation into the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 2 Command, AIG Moshood Jimoh, following corruption allegations made by social media activist Martins Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM).

The Force disclosed that AIG Jimoh has been invited for questioning as part of an administrative review, while VeryDarkMan has also been summoned to provide evidence supporting the claims he has made publicly.

The development was announced in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu.

According to the statement, the criminal case linked to the allegations has already been investigated and is currently before a court, following legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

The police said the matter is now sub judice and can only be determined by the court, stressing that it will not allow public campaigns or social media commentary to influence judicial proceedings.

However, the Force clarified that its internal accountability mechanisms remain active and separate from the court process.

“As part of our internal accountability process, the Assistant Inspector-General in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department has invited AIG Moshood Jimoh for questioning in connection with the allegations raised,” the statement said.

The Force also revealed that the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID), Abuja, formally invited VeryDarkMan on July 30, 2026, to appear before investigators and substantiate the corruption allegations he made against the senior police officer.

Police authorities said the invitations demonstrate their commitment to investigating credible complaints regardless of the rank of the officer involved or the public profile of the complainant.

For weeks, VeryDarkMan has published a series of videos on social media accusing AIG Jimoh of corruption and abuse of office.

He alleged that while Jimoh served as the Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, officers under his command falsely implicated businessman Ahmed Tajudeen Akanbi in connection with the killings of Sheriff Ishola Salami in April 2023 and Prince Ademola Akinloye in August 2024 in the Ajiran area of Eti-Osa.

VDM further claimed that two suspects arrested in January 2026 initially confessed to involvement in one of the killings without mentioning Akanbi, alleging that later statements implicating the businessman were obtained through pressure and torture.

The activist repeatedly challenged the senior police officer to release the original statements made by the suspects, insisting he should face legal consequences if his allegations prove false.

While reaffirming Nigerians’ constitutional right to freedom of expression and to demand accountability from public institutions, the Police warned that such rights do not extend to spreading unverified allegations or defaming individuals.

The Force said any officer found guilty after due investigation would face appropriate disciplinary measures, while those making false and malicious allegations could also be prosecuted.

It urged VeryDarkMan to honour the invitation issued by the Force CID and allow both the administrative investigation and the ongoing court proceedings to take their lawful course.
