President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a six-month extension of the tenure of the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Adewale Adeniyi, marking the second time his appointment has been extended within a year.

The extension was announced in a statement by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

According to the Presidency, Adeniyi’s tenure, which was due to expire on August 1, 2026, has now been extended until February 2027.

The six-month extension is aimed at enabling the Customs boss to consolidate the implementation of the National Single Window project and ensure an orderly succession within the service.

“The six-month extension, which will expire in February 2027, is to enable him to consolidate the implementation of the National Single Window and ensure an orderly succession in the service,” the statement said.

During the extension period, Adeniyi is also expected to work with the NCS Board to oversee the promotion of qualified officers to the rank of Comptroller of Customs and facilitate the retirement of officers who have reached the mandatory age of 60 years or completed 35 years of service.

This is the second extension granted to Adeniyi since becoming Customs boss. In July 2025, President Tinubu approved a one-year extension of his tenure to allow him complete ongoing reforms and key initiatives within the agency.

Adeniyi was appointed Comptroller-General of Customs in June 2023, following the exit of former Customs chief, Hameed Ali. He initially served in an acting capacity before his substantive appointment.

A graduate of Obafemi Awolowo University, Adeniyi joined the Nigeria Customs Service in the late 1980s and rose steadily through the ranks, becoming Deputy Comptroller in 2012, Comptroller in 2017, Assistant Comptroller-General in 2020, Acting Deputy Comptroller-General in January 2023, before eventually emerging as Comptroller-General later that year.

The latest extension means Adeniyi will remain at the helm of the Nigeria Customs Service until February 2027 as the agency continues implementing reforms aimed at improving trade facilitation, revenue generation, and border management.
