Rivers Women Walk Out Of Remi Tinubu’s Empowerment Event, Demand for Lady Valerie Fubara

Hundreds of Rivers women walked out of an empowerment event organized by First Lady Remi Tinubu, demanding her presence or that of Lady Valerie Fubara.

The protest reflected growing political tensions and rejection of perceived imposed leadership in the state.

Tensions ran high in Rivers State on Thursday as hundreds of women staged a mass walkout from the “Renewed Hope Initiative” empowerment programme organized by Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Remi Tinubu.

The event, which promised empowerment items for 500 women, took a dramatic turn when Mrs. Theresa Ibas, wife of the Sole Administrator, was called to speak on the First Lady’s behalf. The crowd erupted in protest, chanting: “We want Valerie Sim-Fubara or Remi Tinubu! Not the wife of an imposter!”

Many attendees expressed outrage that Senator Tinubu failed to attend personally, despite prior expectations. The absence of Rivers First Lady, Lady Valerie Fubara, from the official programme further fueled the unrest.

“We were told Remi Tinubu would be here. If she couldn’t make it, Lady Valerie should have addressed us. Not someone who doesn’t represent our people,” one protesting woman said.

Efforts to pacify the crowd failed, and the women exited the venue in protest, effectively shutting down the event.

Observers see the walkout as a clear rejection of perceived imposed leadership and a strong show of loyalty to Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his wife. The incident underscores the ongoing political tension in Rivers State amid federal involvement in local governance.

As of press time, Senator Remi Tinubu’s office had not responded to the protest.
