The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has unveiled the preliminary lists of teams for the upcoming African Cup of Nations, set to take place in Ivory Coast in January.

VerseNews reports that among the notable inclusions is Captain Ahmed Musa, who has secured a spot in the Super Eagles’ 41-man list.

However, it is worth mentioning that Maduka Okoye, the talented goalkeeper from Udinese in Italy, who previously represented the Nigerian team in the last AFCON held in Cameroon, was not featured in the list released by CAF on their official website this Wednesday.

In addition to Musa, several other players who have been absent from the team for a considerable period of time have made it to the provisional squad. These players include William Troost-Ekong, Zaidu Sanusi, and Paul Onuachu.

It is important to note that the list will eventually be trimmed down to 27 players, with the final submission deadline set for January 3, 2024. This means that there will be an increase of four players compared to the usual 23-player format for the tournament.

Nevertheless, it is crucial to highlight that the inclusion of these four additional players in the final list is merely an option and not an obligation imposed by the African football-governing body.

CAF has specified that if a team submits a final squad consisting of 24 to 27 players, only 23 of them will be eligible for selection in each match throughout the tournament.

Additionally, CAF has stated that a player from the final squad can only be replaced in the event of a serious injury, and this replacement can only occur if the medical certificate is approved by the CAF Medical Committee at least 24 hours before the team’s first match.

The final tournament is scheduled to take place from 13 January to 11 February 2024 in the Ivorian cities of Abidjan, Bouake, Korhogo, San Pedro, and Yamoussoukro.
