Human rights activist, Aisha Yesufu, on Thursday, has raised concerns over the alleged overcharging of students by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

VerseNews reports that Yesufu, in a recent post on her official X handle, asserted that JAMB’s revenue of over N50 billion, as mentioned by Vice President Kashim Shettima, may be contributing to widening the educational inequality gap in the country.

Yesufu emphasised that JAMB, as an educational body, should not function as a profit-making organization.

The criticism comes in response to Shettima’s revelation that Prof Ishaq Oloyede, JAMB Registrar, generated over N50 billion for the Federal Government within a year.

Shettima disclosed this information during a public engagement organized by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). He equally noted that JAMB never made up to $1m for the Federal Government before Oloyede assumed office.

In her statement, Yesufu questioned the legitimacy of JAMB making such substantial revenue, stating, “Let me say what I have said before. JAMB is not supposed to be a money making organization.

“JAMB making 50bn means JAMB is over charging students.

“I will even call it extortion of poor and vulnerable students and widening the educational inequality gap,” she added.
