Workers in the construction industry today began a three-day warning strike over employers’ refusal to implement the Federal Government’s wage award.

The workers, under the aegis of the National Union of Civil Engineering Construction, Furniture and Wood Workers (NUCECFWW) and Construction and Civil Engineering Senior Staff Association (CCESSA), conveyed their grievance and warning in a joint letter signed by the National President of NUCECFWW, Stephen Okoro and National President of CCESSA, Ayodeji Adeyemo, at the weekend.

Urging all members to ensure total compliance, the unions threatened that the three-day warning strike was to press home their demands.

“The Joint NEC of both unions has directed all members (NUCECFWW/CCESSA) to proceed on a three-day warning strike starting from Monday, Feb. 5, 2024, in the first instance to press home our demand.

“Consequent upon the above, all members across the board are advised to ensure total compliance,” the statement read in part.

The National Executive Council (NEC) of both unions said that if nothing positive was done after the warning strike, indefinite action would commence.

They alleged that the Construction Civil Engineering, Employers Association of Nigeria (CCEAN) was frustrating the efforts of the unions on the implementation of the wage award in line with the agreement reached between the Federal Government and organised labour.

According to them, employers in the construction industry in Nigeria have refused the option of dialogue, choosing to adopt a confrontational approach.
