“Junta Suspends Political Party”: Mali’s military junta has suspended all political party activities and associations until further notice, citing public order concerns.

This follows the 2020 coup that placed the country under military rule.

Mali’s ruling military junta has issued a decree halting all political party activities and associations of a political nature until further notice, citing the need to maintain public order.

Versenews reports that government spokesperson Abdoulaye Maiga made the announcement in a statement read on state television on Wednesday evening.

Since August 2020, Mali has been under military rule following a coup, one of eight such power seizures in West and Central Africa over the past four years.

The current junta took power in a second coup in 2021 and committed to reinstating civilian rule by March 26, 2024, following elections initially scheduled for February.

However, the junta postponed the February elections indefinitely in September 2022, citing technical issues. This decision led to widespread discontent among political groups.

Last month’s missed transition deadline further fueled calls from major political parties and civil society groups for a clear timetable for elections.

“We will use all legal and legitimate avenues for the return of normal constitutional order in our country,” stated a joint statement signed by over 20 groups, including a significant opposition coalition and the toppled ex-president’s party.

Mali’s military rulers have previously failed to meet promises to hold elections, including a prior commitment for February 2022.

The recent suspension of political party activities further deepens concerns about the path to democracy and civilian rule in Mali.
