NYSC Lagos allegedly threatened a corps member for criticizing Tinubu’s government and lamenting economic hardship in a viral TikTok video.

The incident has sparked outrage, with many condemning it as an attack on free speech.

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Lagos Secretariat has come under heavy criticism following allegations that it threatened a female corps member for expressing her frustration over the worsening cost of living in Nigeria.

The young woman, overwhelmed by inflation, soaring rent, and daily survival struggles, reportedly broke down in tears – only to be met with intimidation instead of support.

In a viral TikTok video seen by VerseNews, the corps member lamented the rising cost of living and accused President Bola Tinubu’s government of doing little to address inflation.

Her comments came in response to the Federal Government’s controversial approach to tackling inflation, which has included redefining economic terms rather than implementing substantial policy changes.

Rather than addressing her concerns, NYSC officials allegedly called and threatened her, attempting to silence her criticism. This move has sparked widespread outrage, with many Nigerians condemning the NYSC for stifling free speech.

Critics argue that in a democratic society, citizens have the right to criticize their leaders without fear of intimidation.

Civil society groups and concerned Nigerians are now demanding that the NYSC Lagos office be held accountable, issue a formal apology to the corps member, and reaffirm its commitment to protecting corps members’ welfare rather than acting as an enforcer of political silence.

The right to free speech remains fundamental, and any attempt to suppress it is an attack on the democratic values Nigeria claims to uphold.
