Nigeria’s Super Falcons suffered a shocking defeat in their opening match of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations as Malawi stunned the defending champions in Rabat on Tuesday night.

The result was a major upset, with Malawi’s Scorchers making history in their first-ever WAFCON appearance.

Nigeria came into the match as 10-time African champions and favourites to start Group C with a win, but Malawi showed courage, discipline and sharpness in front of goal to punish the Super Falcons.

Super Falcons Fall in WAFCON Opener

The first half ended goalless, with Nigeria seeing more of the ball but failing to break down a determined Malawi side.

The Super Falcons pushed for the opener, but Malawi stayed compact and waited for their chances.

The game changed late in the second half when Malawi struck in the 78th minute before adding another goal two minutes later after poor defending from Nigeria.

Nigeria tried to fight back in stoppage time, but Malawi scored again to put the match beyond reach.

Uchenna Kanu later pulled one back deep into added time, but it was not enough to save Nigeria from defeat.

Why the Defeat Is a Big Shock

This result is painful because Malawi are debutants at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, while Nigeria are the most successful team in the competition’s history.

Before the match, the Super Falcons were expected to dominate and begin their title defence strongly.

Instead, Malawi recorded one of the biggest results of the tournament so far.

What Went Wrong for Nigeria?

The Super Falcons had moments of control but struggled to turn possession into goals.

The biggest problems were:

  • Poor finishing in key moments
  • Defensive lapses late in the game
  • Slow reaction after Malawi’s first goal
  • Failure to control Malawi’s counter-attacks
  • Lack of sharpness in the final third

For a team chasing an 11th WAFCON title, this was not the start Nigeria wanted.

Malawi Make History

For Malawi, this is a famous night.

The Scorchers entered the tournament as outsiders, but their victory over Nigeria will give them huge confidence going into their remaining Group C matches.

The win also proves that debutants cannot be underrated in this year’s expanded WAFCON.

What Next for the Super Falcons?

Nigeria must now respond quickly.

The Super Falcons still have group games against Zambia and Egypt, and there is still a chance to qualify for the knockout stage.

However, the pressure is now higher. Nigeria cannot afford another poor performance if they want to defend their title and secure a place at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The defeat to Malawi is a serious warning to the Super Falcons.

Nigeria still have the quality to recover, but they must improve their defending, finishing and game management immediately.

For Malawi, this is a historic victory. For Nigeria, it is a painful wake-up call.
