President Bola Tinubu joined the celebration of the Super Falcons’ historic 2024 WAFCON victory with a surprise video call to the team shortly after their dramatic 3-2 comeback win against host nation Morocco in Rabat.

President Bola Tinubu has commended the Super Falcons for their dramatic 3-2 comeback win over host nation Morocco in the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) final, describing their performance as a source of national pride.

In a heartfelt video call with the team shortly after the match at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat, Tinubu praised their resilience, especially after coming from two goals down to clinch a record-extending 10th WAFCON title.

He singled out standout players Esther Okoronkwo, Folashade Ijamilusi, Jennifer Echegini, and team captain Rasheedat Ajibade for special recognition, saying, “We are very, very proud of you. You have lifted our spirits, especially for the younger generation. You will be celebrated.”

The President also applauded the coaching crew, team management, and sports ministry officials, adding that an official reception would be held in their honour when they return to Nigeria.

Responding on behalf of the team, Ajibade expressed gratitude for the prompt payment of bonuses and assured the President that they would personally bring the trophy home.

“Thank you so much for the payment. We appreciate you, Sir, and we are coming to give you the cup when we get back,” she said.
