PSG came from two goals down to beat Spurs 4-3 on penalties after a 2-2 draw, with debut goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier inspiring their first-ever Super Cup win.

European champions Paris Saint-Germain began the new season in style by lifting the UEFA Super Cup after a thrilling comeback to beat Tottenham Hotspur 4-3 on penalties, following a 2-2 draw in Udine, Italy.

Tottenham, in their first competitive match under new coach Thomas Frank, looked on course for the trophy when Micky van de Ven struck in the 39th minute and Cristian Romero doubled the lead just after half-time.

However, PSG’s substitutes turned the game on its head. Lee Kang-in pulled one back in the 85th minute before Goncalo Ramos powered in a header deep into stoppage time to force a shoot-out.

The penalty drama began with Vitinha missing PSG’s first attempt, but goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier — making his debut — saved from Van de Ven, and Spurs’ Mathys Tel missed the target. Nuno Mendes kept his nerve to score the decisive kick for PSG after successful efforts from Ramos, Ousmane Dembele, and Lee.

It marked the first time PSG, or any French club, have claimed the Super Cup, taking their 2025 trophy haul to five. Captain Marquinhos praised the team’s mental strength, saying, “They sat back after going 2-0 up, and it’s dangerous to invite PSG to attack like that.”

The win comes despite PSG having minimal pre-season preparation, having only returned to training a week ago after losing last month’s FIFA Club World Cup final to Chelsea.

Tottenham’s Frank, while disappointed, was upbeat: “We had them where we wanted for 80 minutes, but the 2-1 goal shifted momentum. I’m proud of the players and the fans — a penalty shoot-out is always a coin toss.”

New signings Mohammed Kudus and Joao Palhinha debuted for Spurs, while Chevalier’s heroics for PSG kept the contest alive. Now, PSG turn to their Ligue 1 opener against Nantes on Sunday, while Spurs face Burnley in the Premier League.
