The Nigerian military has confirmed the arrest of a wanted commander of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), identified as ‘Gentle’, along with eight of his accomplices during coordinated operations in Imo and Ebonyi States.

The arrest was announced on Thursday by Major General Magnus Kangye, Director of Defence Media Operations, during a press briefing in Abuja. He revealed that ‘Gentle’ had been on the military’s wanted list for his alleged involvement in terrorist activities across the South-East region.

“Between October 8 and 13, troops of the Joint Task Force Operation UDO KA carried out several offensives and arrested the IPOB/ESN terrorist commander known as ‘Gentle,’ alongside eight other criminals,” Kangye stated.

According to him, the arrests took place in Owerri West and Mbaitoli Local Government Areas of Imo State, as well as Izzi and Ohaukwu LGAs in Ebonyi State.

“The suspect is believed to be one of IPOB’s logistics suppliers. During her arrest, three children were found in her custody. Investigations revealed they were the biological children of a wanted IPOB/ESN leader, Maduabuchi Nwankwo, also known as ‘Emergency,’” he disclosed.

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) added that the arrests are part of a wider series of counter-insurgency operations that have led to the neutralisation and capture of several insurgents across the country in recent weeks.

“The troops remain committed to dismantling all criminal networks threatening peace and stability in the South-East and other parts of Nigeria,” Kangye affirmed.
