Despite the loss, the Nigerian international achieved a historic personal milestone that cements his legacy among football’s elite.

Iwobi, who began his career at Arsenal’s Hale End Academy, started the match and put in another composed performance, even though his side failed to find the net. Arsenal claimed victory through a well-executed set piece, maintaining their position at the top of the league table.
According to the Premier League’s official statistics, Iwobi has now made 299 EPL appearances, surpassing Shola Ameobi’s long-standing record of 298 appearances — a record that had stood for years among Nigerian players in England.

The 29-year-old midfielder’s journey in the Premier League has been nothing short of remarkable, featuring for three top clubs — Arsenal (100 matches), Everton (123 matches), and Fulham (76 matches).

He now leads an illustrious list of Nigerian footballers who have excelled in England’s top flight, overtaking legends such as:
- Shola Ameobi – 298 appearances
- Nwankwo Kanu – 273 appearances
- Yakubu Aiyegbeni – 252 appearances
- John Obi Mikel – 249 appearances
Iwobi is expected to reach another milestone when he makes his 300th Premier League appearance next weekend against Newcastle United, the same club where Ameobi built his legendary status.
Beyond his club achievements, Iwobi continues to play a vital role for the Super Eagles of Nigeria, recently helping the national team secure qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup playoffs.
