  • Lieutenant Ahmed Yerima, the naval officer who recently clashed with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, was stopped by police in Abuja for driving with a concealed plate number.

Lieutenant Ahmed Yerima, the Nigerian naval officer who went viral after a heated confrontation with the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, was again in the news on Sunday after being stopped by policemen in Abuja for driving with a covered plate number.

A video circulating online showed policemen questioning Yerima for allegedly refusing to identify himself while driving a vehicle with a concealed number plate. The officers in the clip claimed that the naval officer resorted to insults instead of proper identification.

The incident triggered widespread speculation on social media, with some posts alleging that the police “attacked” the naval officer.

However, the Federal Capital Territory Police Command has debunked those claims, describing them as false and grossly misleading.

In a statement issued on Monday by the Command’s spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, the police clarified that the patrol team was conducting a routine stop-and-search operation at the NNPC Junction along Kubwa Expressway when they intercepted an ash-coloured Toyota Camry with a covered plate number and fully tinted windows.

Moments later, three naval personnel arrived, identified Yerima as their colleague, and recorded the scene before departing. Upon the confirmation, police officers allowed the vehicle to leave without incident.

The statement reads in part:

“The attention of FCT Police Command has been drawn to publications alleging an attack on one Lt. Ahmed Yerima at NNPC Junction in Kubwa. These claims are false and grossly misleading.”

“Officers politely requested the occupant’s identity in line with standard procedure after observing concealed plates and tinted windows. The occupant refused to identify himself and declined engagement.”

“A few minutes later, naval personnel arrived and cordially identified him as their colleague. After this confirmation, the vehicle was allowed to proceed.”

The Police Command expressed surprise that a routine stop-and-search encounter was twisted into narratives of an “assassination attempt,” urging the public to disregard such claims.
