  • Former IPOB lead counsel, Sir Ifeanyi Ejiofor, has released a detailed strategy outlining legal and political steps he believes are crucial to securing the release of detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

Sir Ifeanyi Ejiofor, former lead counsel to the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has released what he describes as a strategic roadmap aimed at supporting ongoing efforts to secure Kanu’s release.

In a statement titled “When Strategy Must Replace Showmanship – The Immediate Blueprint for Securing Kanu’s Release,” Ejiofor said the sensitive nature of the case requires a careful combination of legal expertise, political negotiation, and discreet stakeholder engagement.

Ejiofor noted that intense public emotions and continuous commentary around the matter have made it necessary to shift focus from speculation to structured, result-oriented actions.

Key Components of Ejiofor’s Proposed Strategy

1. Joint Visit to Kanu in Detention

Ejiofor recommended that legal and political stakeholders visit Kanu together to obtain his direct mandate and unify all efforts moving forward. He stressed that such alignment must precede any legal filings or political engagements.

2. Formation of a High-Level Legal Team

He called for assembling a “formidable team of legal luminaries” experienced in complex constitutional and appellate matters.
“This is not the season for theatrics,” Ejiofor said, urging that only seasoned professionals should handle the next phase of legal battles.

3. Coordinated Political Engagement

Ejiofor emphasised the need for influential political leaders, especially from the South East, to work collaboratively and discreetly toward political solutions. He declined to name individuals but said only trusted figures with national credibility should lead these efforts.

4. Discreet Dialogue with the Federal Government

According to him, meaningful engagement with the Federal Government should take place after consultations with Kanu. He advised that appeals should not be filed without proper groundwork, warning that doing so could be counterproductive.

5. Call for Calm and Disciplined Advocacy

Ejiofor urged supporters to exercise restraint in public commentary, avoiding statements or actions that could undermine delicate legal and political processes. He cautioned against opportunism and insisted that the situation demands minimal publicity.

Despite the complexities surrounding the case, Ejiofor expressed optimism that a disciplined and structured approach—combining legal precision with political diplomacy—could ultimately pave the way for Kanu’s release.
