Terrorists have killed Reverend Edwin Achi, the Anglican priest abducted with his wife from their home in Ungwan Maijero, Kaduna, on October 28.

The Diocese of Kaduna, Anglican Communion, confirmed his death in a statement released on its Facebook page Wednesday night. Achi served as the Priest-in-Charge of Ebenezer Anglican Church before his abduction.

A family member, giving an update on X, said the terrorists murdered the cleric on Monday—two days before their ransom ultimatum expired. “Killed him two days ago and posted their pictures like nothing happened, while the ultimatum hasn’t even lapsed,” he wrote.

Investigations show the attackers also abducted the couple’s daughter during the incident, which occurred in the early hours of the morning.

Announcing the priest’s death, the Church described his passing as a painful blow to the diocese. “Ven. Edwin Achi, who was kidnapped alongside his wife on 28th October, 2025, has been confirmed dead. His transition is a painful loss to the entire Diocese, the clergy, the Church family, and all who were blessed by his faithful ministry,” the statement read. It added that prayers continue for the release of his wife and daughter, who remain in captivity.

Earlier on Wednesday, FIJ reported that the kidnappers released photographs of the priest, his wife and several other abductees. A relative revealed that the terrorists threatened to execute both Achi and his wife if the family failed to pay a ransom of at least N200 million by the end of the week.

According to the family, the kidnappers initially demanded N600 million, an amount they described as impossible. The demand was later reduced to around N200 million, but the family says they cannot raise the sum.

“When FIJ called the Kaduna police spokesperson, Mansir Hassan, he promised to respond but had yet to provide an update as of press time.”

The killing has triggered fresh outrage over worsening insecurity in Kaduna and the repeated targeting of religious leaders, families and communities across the state.
