Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has formally left the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to join the All Progressives Congress (APC), taking his core supporters along with him.

The announcement was made on Tuesday at a stakeholders’ meeting inside the Government House in Port Harcourt. This followed a closed-door consultation with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Abuja the previous day.

Addressing party members and loyalists from both sides, Fubara said his decision was driven by the PDP’s inability to protect him during the recent political turmoil in the state, while the APC stepped in with support.

“The most important outcome of that meeting is that we now have full support to leave where we were because we didn’t get the protection we needed,” he said. “If President Tinubu had not intervened, there wouldn’t be a Siminalayi Fubara today.”

The governor emphasised that his move to the APC would also come with political backing for President Tinubu.

“We have the people and supporters with us. Our decision is to move to the APC and fully support the President’s second-term bid,” he declared.

Fubara’s defection marks a significant shift in the political balance of Rivers State and is expected to have major implications ahead of the 2027 general elections.
