Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, who represents Abia South Senatorial District, has outlined strict conditions under which he would consider defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday, Abaribe said any consideration of joining the ruling party would depend on major changes in the way President Bola Tinubu’s administration is being run, particularly policies he believes are harming Nigerians.

According to the senator, the first requirement would be the reversal of policies that “punish Nigerians.” He also said the size of government must be reduced and that individuals around the President must be properly checked.

Abaribe stressed that Nigeria operates a democratic system, not a monarchy, and governance must align with democratic principles.

When asked if he would defect to the APC if President Tinubu personally reached out to him, the lawmaker said he would clearly state his demands.

“I will give him all the conditions and he can fulfil it. First of all, you must see all your policies, all the policies that punish Nigerians, you reverse them. That is number one.

“Number two, you cut down your government. Number three, you reign in all the people around you. Number four, there are so many things we will tell him.

“It’s up to him what he’s going to do. This is not a monarchy. This is a democracy,” Abaribe said.

He added that he would be the last person to defect to the APC if Nigeria’s political system remains functional.

“If there’s anybody that’s going to defect to APC, I think I should be the very, very last one. By the time I will defect, that means that there will be no parties in Nigeria,” he said.
