President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has eulogised late former President Muhammadu Buhari, saying his life and leadership will be remembered not for the privileges of power but for the values he upheld long after leaving office.

Tinubu spoke at the official presentation of the book “From Soldier to Statesman: The Legacy of Muhammadu Buhari” held at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja, where he served as Guest of Honour.

In his remarks, the President said Buhari exemplified modest living and viewed public office as a sacred trust rather than a personal reward. According to him, true leadership is measured by enduring values, not by status or material privileges.

“The measure of a leader is not simply the offices he held or the motorcades that accompanied him. It is what persists when the sirens fall silent,” Tinubu said.

He extended the nation’s condolences to the Buhari family, assuring them of Nigeria’s prayers and gratitude for the former president’s years of service, adding that the Buhari name would continue to inspire noble leadership across generations.

Reflecting on their shared political journey, Tinubu recalled the broad coalition that led to the historic 2015 election victory, which unseated an incumbent government and reshaped Nigeria’s political landscape.

“Our movement united diverse interests and achieved a historic victory in 2015 by unseating an incumbent president,” he said.

The President also highlighted the growth of the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing it as the fastest-growing political party in Africa, born out of the coalition formed in 2014.

Tinubu outlined key pillars of Buhari’s legacy, including humility, discipline, security, vision, and social justice. He noted that Buhari preferred simplicity over ornamentation and believed that a leader must first discipline himself before reforming a system.

On security, Tinubu said Buhari invested in personnel and platforms across the armed forces and pursued reforms that endured beyond public attention. He also praised Buhari’s commitment to long-term development through infrastructure projects such as roads, railways, bridges, and airport modernisation.

The President further commended Buhari’s focus on social welfare, noting that he believed in targeted social investments to protect the poor and vulnerable.

Tinubu urged Nigerians to sustain Buhari’s legacy, saying, “A legacy is given greater meaning when those who follow choose to continue what has been started. That is my duty.”

He emphasised that Buhari’s honesty earned him respect even from critics and stressed the importance of cooperation in politics, noting that governance must rise above partisan divisions once the oath of office is taken.

In his closing remarks, Tinubu called for unity and national progress, stating that Nigeria is greater than any tribe, religion, or political party. He prayed for divine mercy for Buhari and peace, unity, and wisdom for the nation.

The book was reviewed by Dr Charles Omole, who described it as a balanced and intellectually honest account of Buhari’s life, achievements, and shortcomings, preserving national memory and offering lessons for future leaders.

Former President Muhammadu Buhari died on July 13, 2025, at the age of 82 in a London clinic after a prolonged illness. His remains were returned to Nigeria and buried in Daura, Katsina State, during a state funeral attended by regional and national leaders.
