Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the procurement of new equipment for Nigeria’s armed forces and other security agencies to strengthen the fight against terrorism and banditry.

The disclosure was made by the Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, after a security meeting that lasted nearly two hours at the Presidential Villa, Abuja on Thursday.

Briefing State House correspondents after the meeting, Musa said the president remained committed to supporting security agencies in their operations against insurgents.

“The President has promised more equipment for us to be able to protect the nation, and we assure victory,” he said.

However, the minister did not disclose the specific type or quantity of equipment approved.

Musa explained that the meeting was convened to brief the president on the current security situation across the country, particularly following recent attacks on military formations.

He noted that the meeting was the first attended by the newly appointed Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, since assuming office.

According to the defence minister, the briefing was necessary to ensure the president had accurate information about ongoing security operations.

“You know that there have been a series of attacks, and the security forces have actually risen to the occasion,” he said.

Musa also explained that media reports sometimes present incomplete interpretations of security developments, stressing that the meeting provided an opportunity to present the full picture to the president.

He appealed to Nigerians not to lose confidence in the military, assuring that terrorists and bandits were suffering heavier casualties in ongoing operations.

“The terrorists, the bandits, are taking more casualties. Their commanders are being killed,” he stated.

The minister acknowledged that some military personnel had lost their lives during recent operations, describing the casualties as highly regrettable.

Recent weeks have witnessed increased attacks on military positions in Borno State, including assaults on communities such as Ngoshe, Konduga, Marte, Jakana, and Mainok.

These attacks have resulted in casualties among security personnel and civilians.

Musa attributed the recent surge in terrorist activity partly to the period of Ramadan, explaining that some insurgents believe dying during the holy month guarantees them spiritual rewards.

“It is normal with terrorists during the Ramadan period. For them, they feel when they die, they are going to heaven, so they are ready to commit any offence or to get killed,” he said.

He added that the military had already adjusted its strategies and was recording successes against insurgents.

“We’ve taken over those locations, killed their commanders, and taken over their assets. We’ll continue to do more,” Musa said.

The meeting was attended by service chiefs and heads of major security agencies, including the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, as well as intelligence chiefs.

The development comes amid renewed security concerns in Nigeria’s northeast, where insurgent groups such as Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province have continued attacks on military positions.

Government officials have maintained that the administration remains committed to ending terrorism and restoring security across the country.
