Many Nigerian students under the Federal Government Student Loan Scheme have raised concerns over delayed NELFUND upkeep allowance payments in 2026.

The upkeep allowance is the monthly support paid to eligible student loan beneficiaries to help cover basic living expenses while in school. NELFUND has repeatedly clarified that the approved monthly upkeep allowance remains ₦20,000, not ₦25,000 as circulated in some social media posts.

However, several students have complained that they have not received their upkeep payment for weeks or months, raising questions about whether the allowance has been suspended.

Has NELFUND Suspended Upkeep Allowance?

No. NELFUND has denied suspending students’ upkeep allowance.

In July 2026, the Fund dismissed a viral social media document claiming that upkeep payment had been suspended for the 2025/2026 academic session. NELFUND said the document was fake and did not come from the agency.

The agency advised students to rely only on official NELFUND communication channels and avoid fake notices circulating online.

How Much Is NELFUND Upkeep Allowance?

The approved NELFUND upkeep allowance remains:

₦20,000 monthly

NELFUND earlier clarified that reports claiming the allowance had been increased to ₦25,000 were false.

The upkeep allowance is separate from institutional charges. School fees are paid directly to the institution, while approved upkeep is paid to the student’s bank account.

Why Some Students Have Not Received NELFUND Upkeep Payment

Students may not receive their upkeep allowance on time for several reasons.

1. Portal Technical Glitch

Reports in June 2026 said a technical glitch on the NELFUND portal affected upkeep allowance disbursement for some beneficiaries.

The issue reportedly caused delays while the agency worked to reconcile affected transactions.

This means some students may have been approved but still experienced payment delay because the system needed to confirm and reconcile their records.

2. Payment Reconciliation

When there is a mismatch between the student’s application, school verification, bank details and payment records, NELFUND may need to reconcile the transaction before releasing money.

This can delay payment even after approval.

3. School Verification Delay

NELFUND depends on tertiary institutions to verify student records.

If your school has not verified your details, your upkeep payment may be delayed.

Students should check whether their institution has confirmed:

  • Matric number
  • Admission status
  • Department
  • Level
  • Session
  • School fees
  • Academic calendar

4. Wrong Bank Details

Wrong or mismatched bank details can delay payment.

Common issues include:

  • Wrong account number
  • Name mismatch
  • Inactive bank account
  • Account not linked properly
  • BVN/NIN details not matching the application

Students should ensure their bank account name matches their official school and NIN records.

5. Academic Session Issues

NELFUND has previously explained that upkeep disbursement follows each institution’s academic calendar.

If a student applies for an academic session that has already ended, the upkeep request may be rejected or delayed.

This is why institutions are expected to upload academic calendars and session details on time.

6. Incomplete Documentation

A student’s application may be delayed or rejected if documents are incomplete, unclear or incorrect.

Examples include:

  • Blurry admission letter
  • Wrong matric number
  • Wrong institution
  • Missing documents
  • Conflicting names across documents

7. Application Not Fully Approved

Some students think they are already approved when their application is still under review.

Until your application is fully approved and your school has verified you, payment may not be processed.

8. Fake Portal or Wrong Login

Some students may be using fake links shared on social media.

The official NELFUND portal is:

https://portal.nelf.gov.ng

Students should avoid any website asking for payment before loan approval or upkeep release.

  • Confirm your bank account details.
  • Check your dashboard regularly.
  • Contact your school’s student affairs or ICT/student loan desk.
  • Confirm whether your institution has completed verification.
  • Follow only official NELFUND updates.

Is NELFUND Upkeep Allowance a Grant?

No. The upkeep allowance is part of the student loan scheme.

This means beneficiaries may be required to repay the loan after graduation, according to NELFUND loan terms.

NELFUND’s terms state that the loan amount includes institutional charges and/or upkeep, depending on approval.

NELFUND has not officially suspended upkeep allowance payments. The approved allowance remains ₦20,000 monthly for eligible beneficiaries.

Students who have not received payment may be affected by portal glitches, payment reconciliation, school verification delays, bank detail issues or academic session problems.

The best step is to check your NELFUND dashboard, confirm your school verification status and rely only on official updates from NELFUND.
