Trump Threatens Fresh Strikes on Iran Over Hezbollah

• US President Donald Trump has warned Iran of possible fresh military action if it fails to rein in Hezbollah, as high-level peace negotiations between Washington and Tehran commenced in Switzerland amid renewed violence in Lebanon.

US President Donald Trump has threatened to launch new strikes against Iran if it does not stop Hezbollah from escalating tensions in Lebanon, even as senior American and Iranian officials opened peace talks in Switzerland on Sunday.

The warning comes amid renewed clashes between the Israeli military and Hezbollah, the Iran-backed militant group based in Lebanon, raising concerns that the fragile peace efforts between Washington and Tehran could be undermined.

In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump accused Iran of backing unrest in Lebanon through its proxy forces and issued a stern warning to Tehran.

“Iran must immediately stop their highly paid PROXIES in Lebanon from causing trouble,” Trump wrote. “If they don’t, we’ll hit Iran very hard again, just like we did last week, only harder!!!”

The remarks followed a surge in violence in Lebanon, where Israeli airstrikes reportedly killed at least 30 people on Saturday in eastern and southern parts of the country. The attacks came before a temporary lull in hostilities later in the evening after the Israeli army was instructed to halt clashes with Hezbollah.

The latest tensions threaten to complicate the preliminary peace agreement recently reached between the United States and Iran. The memorandum of understanding signed by both countries on Wednesday reportedly includes provisions for a cessation of hostilities across the region, including in Lebanon.

Despite Trump’s warning, senior US officials expressed optimism about the ongoing diplomatic efforts.

Speaking at the opening of the Switzerland talks, US Vice President JD Vance said significant progress had been made in maintaining the ceasefire in Lebanon over the past few days.

“We’re all working towards regional peace,” Vance stated. “I actually feel great about where we are in Lebanon. There’s still some additional wood to chop but we’re going to keep on working at it.”

Vance further argued that the Trump administration had played a leading role in efforts to reduce tensions and prevent further conflict in Lebanon.

The peace talks are being closely watched by the international community as they represent a crucial attempt to ease longstanding tensions between the United States and Iran, while also preventing a broader regional conflict involving Israel, Hezbollah, and other Tehran-backed groups.

Analysts warn that any renewed military confrontation could jeopardise the diplomatic progress achieved so far and further destabilise an already volatile Middle East.

The discussions in Switzerland are expected to continue as both sides seek to build on recent agreements and preserve the fragile ceasefire arrangements in the region.
