A trained sniffer dog deployed by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has gone viral after helping officers uncover suspected hard drugs concealed inside a vehicle during a search operation in Lagos.

A video circulating online shows an NDLEA operative guiding the detection dog around a parked car during what appeared to be a routine inspection. Moments later, the dog signaled officers to a suspicious section near the vehicle’s boot, prompting a more detailed search.

The operation reportedly led to the discovery of illicit substances hidden inside the vehicle and the arrest of a suspect. However, authorities have yet to disclose the exact type and quantity of drugs recovered or reveal the identity of the suspect.

The incident has once again highlighted the growing importance of the NDLEA’s canine unit in combating drug trafficking and organised crime across Nigeria.

In September 2025, the agency commissioned a state-of-the-art canine complex in Lagos, donated by the German government, to strengthen its drug detection capabilities.

Speaking during the commissioning, NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd.), revealed that sniffer dogs had helped the agency seize more than 17.932 metric tonnes of various illicit substances since their deployment.

The latest operation has drawn praise from many Nigerians online, with many describing the sniffer dog’s quick detection as a reminder of how technology and specially trained K9 units are transforming law enforcement operations in the country.
