A High Court in Anambra State has granted Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, leave to serve court processes on African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain, Kenneth Okonkwo, through substituted means in his ₦8 billion defamation lawsuit.

Justice D.A. Onyefulu approved the application after the court was informed that several attempts to personally serve Okonkwo with the court documents had failed.

The court ordered that the writ of summons and all subsequent court processes be pasted at Okonkwo’s residence in Nsukka, Enugu State, or delivered to any adult at the address, with photographic evidence of the service to be filed before the court.

The lawsuit stems from comments allegedly made by Okonkwo during an appearance on Politics Today on Channels Television, where he claimed that Peter Obi and members of the NDC’s South-East caucus demanded bribes from House of Representatives and Senate aspirants in exchange for party tickets.

Obi described the allegations as false and defamatory, insisting they seriously damaged his reputation. Before filing the suit, he demanded a public retraction, an apology in two national newspapers, and compensation, but Okonkwo reportedly declined, maintaining that his comments were based on facts and constituted fair comment on matters of public interest.
