Today, Nigerian celebrities are using their fame in politics to take active part in politics.
In a bid to satisfy the clamour for youth participation and inclusion in politics, certain Nigerian celebrities have taken up the baton of leadership to pioneer change and development in the country.
Although there are narratives that these actors, celebrities and singers may not have been qualified in terms of experience, many have appreciated their courage and boldness to volunteer to provide leadership for Nigeria.
Below are Nigerian celebrities have contested for different seats but lost to their opponents.
1. Olubankole Wellington – Banky W
In November 2018, Banky W announced his intention to contest for the Lagos’ Eti-Osa Federal Constituency seat in Nigeria’s House of Representatives, , on the platform of Modern Democratic Party, formed in 2017.
In the following year, 2019, he lost the election Elections to Babajide Obanikoro of the All Progressive Congress (APC).
Ahead of 2023 general election, Banky W decamped from the Modern Democratic Party (MDP) to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
He secured the PDP’s ticket for the Lagos’ Eti-Osa Federal Constituency seat for the second time.
Banky W losing again, the Federal Constituency seat in Nigeria after Mr. Thaddeus Attah of Labour Party (LP) was declared winner in the Presidential and Federal House of Representative election held on 25th February, 2023

2. Funke Akindele – Jenifa
Jenifa as called by most fans is a popular Nollywood actress who contested for the seat of Deputy Governor of Lagos State under the umbrella of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
However, she was not successful in her bid to represent the state and lost to the incumbent governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
3. Olumide Oworu
Oworu is a Nigerian actor popularly known for his role of Tari in the Africa Magic Series ‘The Johnsons’
He contested for a seat in the House of Representatives to represent the Surulere I constituency in Lagos State under the platform of the Labour Party (LP).
Unluckly, he was defeated by the incumbent, Desmond Elliott of the APC, another popular Nollywood actor.
4. Alexander Abolore Adegbola Akande – 9ice
9ice known as 9ice is a Nigerian musician, songwriter and dancer.
He contested for a seat in the House of Representatives to represent the Ogbomosho North/South/Oriire Federal Constituency in Oyo State in 2015.
He was defeated by his opponent, Prince Akeem Oyewumi, son of the Soun of Ogbomoso, of APC in the Oyo State primary.
5. Kate Henshaw-Nuttall – Kate Henshaw
Kate Henshaw in 2014 aspired to represent the Calabar South Federal Constituency under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)
She lost the primary election to Rt. Hon Essien Ayi but was appointed as Special Adviser Liaison Lagos by the Cross River State Governor Ben Ayade in December 2015
