The video, which gained traction on Friday, originated from a July 20 broadcast by Independent Television and Radio, Edo State.

According to the broadcaster, the incident happened during a wedding reception after food had finished. A couple from the groom’s family reportedly arrived late at the venue, leaving only the portion of food the bride had reserved for her own parents.

The report alleged that the groom’s mother quietly approached the bride and asked if she could give some of the remaining food to the visitors, who had travelled a long distance to attend the ceremony. However, the bride reportedly declined the request.

It was further alleged that when the mother-in-law attempted to serve the food herself, the bride collected it from her and poured it back into the cooler. The action reportedly angered the older woman, who slapped the bride. The bride allegedly retaliated by slapping her mother-in-law in return.

According to the broadcast, the groom remained calm throughout the remainder of the wedding reception. However, it was claimed that just two days after the ceremony, he sought to dissolve the marriage.

A lawyer, Franka Osie, who spoke during the same broadcast, clarified that Nigerian law does not permit the dissolution of a statutory marriage after only two days.

Speaking separately, another legal practitioner also explained that under Nigeria’s Matrimonial Causes Act, couples in a statutory marriage generally cannot file for divorce until they have been married for at least two years. The lawyer noted, however, that a court may allow an earlier divorce in exceptional cases involving hardship or depravity. In some situations, an annulment may also be available.

The report has since generated widespread debate on X, with users expressing different opinions about the conduct of the bride, the mother-in-law and the groom.

Reacting to the incident, #IdorenyinEtuk5 argued that neither the bride nor her mother-in-law handled the situation appropriately and also faulted the groom.

“In my opinion, neither the mother-in-law nor the bride were right in their actions or reactions. The man himself had not shown that he has boundaries. If he did, neither woman would dare act in such manner.”
