The vice-presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Rotimi Amaechi, has been thrown into mourning following the death of his mother, Mrs Mary Amaechi, who passed away at the age of 89.
The former Rivers State governor’s media office confirmed her death in a statement released on Thursday, describing her as a devoted Christian, respected community leader and loving family matriarch whose life was marked by faith, compassion and service.
According to the statement, Mrs Amaechi died on Thursday, although the family did not disclose the cause of her death.
Family Pays Tribute
Paying tribute to the late matriarch, Amaechi’s media office described her as the pillar that held the family together.
The statement reads:
“Late Mrs Mary Amaechi was a cherished matriarch who held her family together in love, peace and unity.”
The family further described her as a woman whose Christian faith remained steadfast throughout her lifetime.
According to the statement:
“She was a community women leader and Christian leader, whose belief and faith in God were firm and resolute.”
Mrs Amaechi was also remembered for her kindness, generosity and positive impact on those around her.
The statement added:
“She was loved and highly respected in her community and will be remembered for her warmth, kindness, and unwavering support for those around her and beyond.”
Amaechi Thanks Nigerians for Their Support
The family expressed appreciation for the numerous messages of condolence already received from friends, political associates and well-wishers.
According to the statement:
“Rt Hon. Amaechi and the entire family are profoundly grateful for the outpouring of condolences and love already being shown them during this difficult time.”
The media office added that details regarding the funeral arrangements would be announced in due course.
Amaechi’s Political Role
The late Mrs Mary Amaechi’s death comes weeks after Rotimi Amaechi was named the vice-presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 general election.
In June, the party selected Amaechi as the running mate to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who emerged as the ADC’s presidential candidate.
Atiku secured the party’s presidential ticket after polling 1,846,370 votes to defeat Amaechi, who received 504,117 votes during the primary election.
Former Managing Director of the defunct FSB International Bank, Mohammed Hayatu-Deen, finished third with 177,120 votes.
With the passing of Mrs Mary Amaechi, condolences have continued to pour in for the former Minister of Transportation and his family as they mourn the loss of their beloved mother and family matriarch.
