Abia State is set to receive a major boost in renewable energy and industrial development with plans to establish a $145 million solar manufacturing plant in the state.

Governor Alex Otti welcomed the investment, describing it as a significant milestone that will drive economic growth, create employment opportunities and position Abia as a key hub for solar manufacturing in Nigeria.

The project, being developed by MD Nwakanma Nigeria Limited in partnership with Chinese technical partners, will be located at Umuelele in Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area.

Speaking while receiving the investors at the Government House in Umuahia, Otti said he was pleased that the project had reached its final investment decision, assuring the developers of his administration’s full support.

“I am glad that you have reached the final investment decision where you are investing up to $145 million. This is exactly what we stand for—creating an enabling environment for businesses to grow and for investors to succeed,” the governor said.

He noted that the state had already made the required land available and pledged to provide any additional support needed to ensure the successful execution of the project.

According to Otti, the investment is about more than just the capital involved.

“It is not just the investment; it is the jobs it will create, the increase in economic activity, and the prosperity it will generate for our people,” he added.

Leader of the investor delegation, Dr. Oko Jaja, said the visit was to update the governor on the progress made so far, revealing that the first tranche of funding for the project is expected to be released in September 2026.

He explained that the visit by the Chinese technical partners was part of the preliminary site assessment ahead of construction and expressed optimism that the plant could commence operations before the end of September.

Beyond manufacturing solar panels and related equipment, the company said the facility will also provide skills acquisition programmes and employment opportunities for young people, further supporting Abia’s industrialisation and Nigeria’s transition to cleaner energy.
