Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters has dismissed claims of a ceasefire agreement with Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province, insisting that troops will maintain operations against armed groups.

The Director of Defence Information, Major-General Samaila Uba, stated this during a joint security briefing in Abuja on Thursday, November 5.

The briefing, held at the National Counter Terrorism Centre under the Office of the National Security Adviser, reviewed security operations conducted in September and October.

“I want to make it clear that there is nothing like a ceasefire,” Uba said.

He explained that the military’s operations extend beyond Boko Haram and ISWAP to kidnappers and other armed groups threatening Nigerians.

Uba cited recent operations in which insurgents were killed, suspects arrested and hostages rescued as evidence that security forces were continuing their offensive.

His remarks came amid renewed concerns over attacks on military positions in northeastern Nigeria. Reuters reported that assaults by Boko Haram and ISWAP had increased in recent weeks despite sustained military efforts to contain the insurgency.

The military’s position is that operations will continue against both insurgent organisations and other armed criminal groups. The reported operational gains remain figures and assessments presented by the security authorities.
