The Supreme Court has scheduled December 15 for the delivery of its judgment on the appeal seeking to compel the Federal Government to release Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), from detention.

VerseNews reports that five-member panel of the apex court, led by Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, approved the date for judgment after lawyers for both the Federal Government and Nnamdi Kanu’s legal team presented their final arguments.

Kanu’s legal team, led by former Attorney-General of the Federation Kanu Agabi, urged the court to order his immediate release and impose “very heavy and punitive costs” against the Federal Government.

On the other hand, the Federal Government’s lawyer, T.A. Gazzali, SAN, requested that the Supreme Court uphold the appeal, set aside the Court of Appeal’s judgment ordering Kanu’s release, and resume his terrorism-related trial in the Federal High Court in Abuja.

The Court of Appeal had ordered Kanu’s release and quashed the terrorism charges against him in a unanimous decision in October 2022, but the Federal Government appealed to the Supreme Court.
