DSS Frees Former EFCC Chairman, Bawa After 134 Days
Bawa was released from the headquarters of the DSS in Abuja on Wednesday evening.
The former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Abdulrashid Bawa, has been released from detention of the Department of State Services (DSS) after four months of arrest.
VerseNews reports that Bawa was released from the headquarters of the DSS in Abuja on Wednesday evening.
Bawa was arrested and detained by the DSS on June 14, 2023, after receiving an undisclosed summons and visiting President Bola Tinubu earlier that day.
The 43-year-old was arrested on June 14, 2023 after being investigated for alleged financial misconduct while working for an anti-corruption agency.
According to sources, the former EFCC boss refused to engage legal representation despite being jailed.
On Wednesday evening, DSS and EFCC Spokesperson Dr. Peter Afunanya and Dele Oywale did not respond to reporters’ questions on Bawa’s release.
In 2019, Bawa was questioned by the new EFCC boss, Ola Olukoye, over the alleged sale of seized assets worth over N4.8 billion.
