The war of words between former President Olusegun Obasanjo and his former deputy, Atiku Abubakar, has intensified, with the All Progressives Congress (APC) throwing its weight behind Obasanjo’s criticism and urging Nigerians not to entrust the former vice president with the country’s leadership.

Speaking with Sunday PUNCH, APC National Secretary Ajibola Basiru said Obasanjo was in the best position to assess Atiku, having worked closely with him during their administration between 1999 and 2007.

According to Basiru, Obasanjo’s remarks should serve as a warning to Nigerians ahead of the 2027 general election.

“Obasanjo has said so many things about Atiku, and he is in a position to know who the former vice president is. No serious Nigerian should take Atiku seriously or give him another leadership opportunity,” Basiru said.

The APC chieftain described Atiku as a serial defector and argued that the former vice president’s political history reflected the concerns repeatedly raised by Obasanjo.

However, Atiku dismissed the criticism, insisting that Obasanjo’s attacks would have no impact on his chances in the 2027 presidential election.

Through his media aide, Paul Ibe, the former vice president said the election would ultimately be decided by Nigerians, not by the opinions of a former president.

“Obasanjo is trying to muddy the waters, but Nigerians will make the decision, not him. He has only one vote,” Ibe stated.

Atiku also accused Obasanjo of attempting to rewrite history and claimed the former president remained bitter over the failure of the controversial third-term agenda, which he said he proudly opposed.

The latest exchange follows Obasanjo’s remark at the unveiling of Charly Boy’s memoir on Friday, where he described choosing Atiku as his running mate in 1999 as “the biggest mistake” of his presidency.

Despite the renewed attacks, Atiku maintained that he has no regrets about working with Obasanjo and remains focused on his bid to unseat President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.
