The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, has directed all lawyers, litigation staff, court registrars, and other officials attached to the Supreme Court to immediately discontinue the use of the title “Barrister” as a prefix to their names in all official engagements.

The directive was contained in a memorandum dated July 13, 2026, and signed by the Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court, Kabir Akanbi. The circular, which was addressed to legal practitioners, litigation staff, court registrars, and lawyers, stated that the move forms part of efforts to uphold professionalism and maintain the highest standards within Nigeria’s apex court.
