VerseNews reports that the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) in a statement via X platform formerly (Twitter) confirmed this development.
According to AEDC, the grid collapses at about 4:30pm on Thursday, leaving millions of homes and businesses without power.
The company appeals to Nigerians and assured that it is working hard to restore normal power supply.
“Dear valued customers, please be informed that the current power outrage is due to a system failure from the National Grid. The system collapses as at about 16:28 hours today 28 March 2024, causing the outage currently be experienced across our franchise area.
“We appeal for your understanding as all stakeholders are working hard to restore normal supply,” the statement reads.
AEDC confirms National Grid collapses
This Online News Platform understands that this development marks the fourth time the grid is collapsing in the first three months of the year, adding to challenges that have long plagued Nigeria’s power sector.
Reports from various distribution companies (DisCos) spanning the nation’s 36 States, their feeders were rendered inactive, resulting in widespread blackouts across the country.
According to Leadership, the grid’s electricity production, previously at 2,984 megawatts by 4 p.m. on Thursday, rapidly dropped to zero within an hour. By 5 p.m., all 21 power plants linked to the grid had ceased operations.
Over the past decade since privatisation, the grid has experienced a staggering 141 collapses, underscoring the magnitude of the systemic challenges facing the industry.
