Chelsea winger Mykhailo Mudryk has been cleared to return to competitive football with immediate effect after the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) partially upheld his appeal against a four-year doping ban imposed by the Football Association.

The 25-year-old Ukraine international has been sidelined since November 2024, after being provisionally suspended in December following an adverse drug test that detected the banned substance meldonium.

Mudryk was initially handed the maximum four-year suspension by the FA. However, he challenged the decision before CAS, which ruled that while he accepted an anti-doping violation, the suspension he had already served was sufficient punishment, allowing him to resume his professional career immediately.

Reacting to the verdict, the Chelsea star described the ordeal as the toughest period of his life and expressed gratitude for being given the opportunity to play football again.

“I am grateful to be cleared to return to playing,” Mudryk said. “As I have always maintained from the outset of this case, I have never knowingly or intentionally taken any banned substance.”

According to the CAS ruling, Mudryk tested positive for meldonium during an out-of-competition test while on international duty with Ukraine in October 2024. The substance is prohibited under anti-doping regulations because it can enhance cardiovascular performance and improve stamina.

However, the tribunal noted that the sample contained only a low concentration of meldonium. CAS further explained that the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has since revised its guidance on the substance.

Although the updated rules could not be applied retroactively, the court stated that if Mudryk’s sample had been tested under the current thresholds, the concentration detected would not have been reported as an adverse analytical finding.

The decision effectively paved the way for the Ukrainian forward’s immediate return to football.

Chelsea welcomed the ruling, saying the club was eager to reintegrate Mudryk into the squad and help him regain full match fitness ahead of the new season.

Mudryk also thanked everyone at Chelsea for their support throughout the process, saying he is excited to begin “the next chapter” of his career after nearly two years away from competitive football.
