A doctor, Nathaniel Spencer, 38, from Quinton, Birmingham, has been charged with multiple sexual offences against 38 patients while working at hospitals in the West Midlands, authorities confirmed.

According to information released on Friday by Staffordshire Police, Spencer faces 15 counts of sexual assault, 17 counts of assault by penetration, nine counts of sexual assault of a child under 13, three counts of assault of a child under 13 by penetration, and one count of attempted assault by penetration.

The Crown Prosecution Service said the charges follow a detailed investigation into allegations connected to Royal Stoke University Hospital in Stoke-on-Trent and Russells Hall Hospital in Dudley. The alleged offences are said to have occurred between 2017 and 2021.

Spencer has been suspended from medical practice in the United Kingdom while the case proceeds. He is scheduled to appear before the North Staffordshire Justice Centre on 20 January 2026.

The two NHS trusts where he worked — University Hospitals of North Midlands (UHNM) and The Dudley Group — have set up dedicated helplines for anyone with concerns about their treatment.

Dr Paul Hudson, operational medical director at The Dudley Group, described the situation as “very distressing” and said the trust had cooperated fully with police throughout the investigation.

UHNM also issued a statement, saying patient safety and wellbeing remain their “highest priority” but adding they could not comment further due to the ongoing court process.
