The 2026 FIFA World Cup came to an exciting conclusion with Spain defeating Argentina 1-0 in the final to lift the trophy for the second time in the nation’s history.

Beyond Spain’s triumph, the first-ever 48-team FIFA World Cup produced a host of remarkable records, making it one of the highest-scoring and most memorable editions of the tournament.

Here are some of the biggest statistics and records from the competition, according to FIFA.

Highest Goals-Per-Game Average in More Than 50 Years

A total of 308 goals were scored across 104 matches, giving the tournament an average of 2.96 goals per game.

It is the highest scoring average since the 1970 FIFA World Cup (2.97 goals per game), surpassing:

Mbappé Breaks Multiple World Cup Records

France captain Kylian Mbappé finished as the tournament’s highest scorer with 10 goals, becoming the first player to win the FIFA World Cup Golden Boot at two different tournaments after also finishing as the top scorer at Qatar 2022.

He also became the first player since Gerd Müller in 1970 to score 10 goals in a single World Cup.

Only Just Fontaine (13 goals in 1958) and Sándor Kocsis (11 goals in 1954) have scored more in one edition.

Mbappé Becomes World Cup’s All-Time Leading Scorer

One of the biggest storylines was the race between Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé to become the tournament’s all-time leading scorer.

Messi entered the tournament with 13 World Cup goals, while Mbappé had 12.

Although Messi reached 21 goals during Argentina’s run to the final, Mbappé overtook him after scoring twice in France’s third-place match against England, ending the tournament with 22 World Cup goals to become the competition’s all-time leading scorer.
