- The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has outlined how Nigerians can report fraud cases and financial crimes through its online petition portal, warning that false petitions could attract up to 10 years in prison.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has explained how members of the public can submit petitions alleging fraud and other financial crimes through its online portal.
According to the anti-graft agency, petitioners must provide accurate and truthful information, warning that filing a false petition is a criminal offence punishable under Nigerian law.
The EFCC stated that Section 64(3) of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act, 2000 prescribes a penalty of up to 10 years’ imprisonment or a fine of up to ₦100,000 for anyone found guilty of submitting a false petition.
Information Required to File an EFCC Petition
To submit a petition online, applicants are required to provide the following information:
Personal Information
- First name
- Middle name (optional)
- Surname
- National Identification Number (NIN)
- Submission type
- Gender
- Phone number
- Email address
- Country
- State
- Local Government Area (LGA)
- Residential address
Case Information
- Subject or title of the petition
- Name of the suspect
- Suspect’s location
- Name of the complainant
- Location where the alleged offence occurred
- Amount involved
- Currency
Petition Details
Petitioners must provide a detailed account of the alleged fraud or financial crime in the designated petition section of the online form.
Supporting Documents
While optional, the EFCC encourages users to upload evidence to support their claims.
Accepted file formats include:
- PDF documents
- Image files
Each uploaded file must not exceed 10MB.
Applicants are also required to complete a security verification and confirm that they understand the consequences of filing a false petition before submitting their complaint.
The commission noted that providing complete and accurate information will help investigators process petitions more efficiently.
