Lagos to Introduce Special Number Plates for Persons With Disabilities

The Lagos State Government has begun plans to introduce specialised vehicle number plates for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) as part of efforts to improve accessibility, inclusion and mobility across the state.’

The proposal was discussed during a meeting between the Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA) and the Lagos State Motor Vehicle Administration Agency (MVAA), where both agencies explored strategies for developing and implementing the disability-friendly vehicle identification system.

Speaking during the meeting, the Permanent Secretary of the MVAA, Abdulrasheed Muri-Okunola, described the initiative as a significant step toward Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s vision of building “A Greater Lagos That Leaves No One Behind.”

According to him, the specialised number plates will improve recognition, accessibility and ease of movement for persons with disabilities while promoting inclusive governance across the state.

Muri-Okunola revealed that discussions had already commenced with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), adding that the agency would begin the necessary administrative processes in collaboration with LASODA to ensure the successful rollout of the initiative.

Earlier, LASODA General Manager, Adenike Oyetunde-Lawal, said the proposed number plates are intended to benefit all categories of persons with disabilities, including parents of children with disabilities and their caregivers.

She noted that the initiative would enhance identification, improve accessibility and reinforce the government’s commitment to protecting the rights of persons with disabilities and promoting equal opportunities.

Both agencies reaffirmed their commitment to implementing the project in line with the Lagos State Special People’s Law, which seeks to eliminate discrimination and ensure full inclusion of persons with disabilities across all sectors.
