A young man, identified as Stephen Jiya, has been sentenced to death by hanging in Niger State for roasting his mother, Comfort Jiya, to death.
VerseNews reports that the State’s Chief Judge, Justice Halima Abdulmalik, in his judgement said Stephen was guilty of culpable homicide, punishable under Section 221 of the Penal Code Law, which attracts the death penalty.
Stephen was arraigned by the Office of the Attorney General of the Niger State Ministry of Justice for the murder of his mother, a retired director in the State Ministry of Education, in December 2021.
The deceased, a former Principal of Government Girls’ Secondary School, Sabon Wuse and Maryam Babangida Girls’ Science College, Minna, died after she was set ablaze by Stephen on Monday December 20, 2021.
In her ruling, the judge said the prosecution has proved its case beyond every reasonable doubt.
“The prosecutor has proved its case beyond reasonable doubt against the defendant, and I hereby find you, Stephen Jiya, guilty of the offence of culpable homicide, which is contrary to Section 221 of the penal code.
In the circumstances, the sentence of the court upon you is that you should be hanged by the neck, electrocuted, executed, or injected with lethal injection until you are dead, and may the Lord have mercy on your soul,” she said.
