Nigeria’s Super Falcons will face host nation Morocco in the final of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), setting up a thrilling rematch of their heated semi-final clash from the last edition.

The Super Falcons booked their place in Saturday’s final after edging out rivals South Africa 2-1 in a tense encounter. Rasheedat Ajibade opened the scoring with a well-taken penalty just before halftime, giving Coach Justin Madugu’s side the lead.

South Africa, the defending champions, drew level in the 60th minute through Linda Motlhalo, who also converted from the spot. The match seemed destined for extra time until Nigerian defender Michelle Alozie sent in a hopeful long ball deep into stoppage time. The delivery floated over everyone — including South African goalkeeper Andile Dlamini — and nestled into the net, sealing a dramatic late victory for Nigeria.

Attention then shifted to the second semi-final, where host nation Morocco battled Ghana in front of a raucous home crowd. The Black Queens struck first through Stella Nyamekye in the 26th minute, but Morocco responded with a 55th-minute equaliser from Sakina Ouzraoui Diki.

With the match ending 1-1 after extra time, Morocco held their nerve in the penalty shootout, triumphing 4-2 to book their second consecutive WAFCON final appearance.

Saturday’s final at Rabat’s Stade Olympique will be a rematch of the 2022 WAFCON semi-final, where Nigeria—reduced to nine players after two red cards—lost 5-4 on penalties after a 1-1 draw. This time, the Super Falcons are determined to reclaim the title in what they’ve dubbed “Mission X” — a pursuit of their record-extending 10th WAFCON crown.

Morocco, meanwhile, will aim to win their first-ever title on home soil, hoping to erase the pain of their 2022 final loss to South Africa.

The 2024 WAFCON was initially scheduled for last year but was postponed to avoid clashing with the women’s football event at the Paris Olympic Games. Morocco will also host the next edition of the tournament in 2026.
