A dramatic scene played out at the Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday after operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) forcefully took African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, into custody following a court order remanding him in Kuje Correctional Centre.

A video circulating on social media showed armed DSS operatives surrounding Sowore inside the court premises and escorting him away shortly after Justice Mohammed Umar ordered his remand pending the hearing of his application seeking a stay of the court’s decision revoking his bail.

The footage, which has since gone viral online, captured the tense moments as security operatives moved Sowore from the courtroom area into their custody.

Justice Umar had earlier directed that the activist-politician be remanded in Kuje Correctional Centre pending the hearing and determination of his motion challenging the revocation of his bail and the issuance of a bench warrant against him.

The court subsequently adjourned the matter until June 24.

Sowore’s legal troubles escalated after he failed to appear in court for the continuation of his trial, prompting the judge to revoke his bail and issue a warrant for his arrest on June 16.

The activist had previously chosen to represent himself after his legal team withdrew from the case.

The video of DSS operatives taking Sowore into custody has generated widespread reactions online, with supporters and critics alike debating the manner in which the activist was taken away following the court’s order.

Sowore is expected to remain in custody at Kuje Correctional Centre pending the next hearing in the case.
