“He has been beating the woman for more than four years. That day, he beat her so badly we had to stop him,” a neighbor, who asked to remain anonymous revealed.

The eyewitness said when neighbors tried to shelter Ebong’s wife, he threatened further violence against her if she ever slept outside their home.

Sources alleged that Ebong is a member of the Nigerian Bar Association’s Uyo branch, but the branch leadership could not be reached for comment on his membership status or whether they were aware of abuse allegations.

Police and human rights groups have recently escalated efforts to curb domestic violence, which remains prevalent in some areas of the country.

While the details could not be independently verified, the case underscores the ongoing challenges many Nigerian women face, especially in more rural regions. Community awareness and law enforcement action are viewed as key to reducing violence against women.

However, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) says it has began an investigation into the viral video of a lawyer assaulting his wife after his identity was confirmed.

In a statement released, the National Publicity Secretary of the Association, Akorede Habeeb Lawal says the lawyer has been identified as Ekere S. Ebong.

He added that the President of the NBA, Yakubu Maikyau, has ordered the Uyo branch of the association to investigate the incident as a way of establishing a case of professional misconduct against the lawyer.

The Nigerian Bar Association has become aware of this disturbing incident.

“Preliminary findings have confirmed that the man in the video is a lawyer by name, Ekere S. Ebong. The NBA President @YCMaikyauSAN has consequently directed NBA Uyo Branch to investigate the incident..as a first step in establishing a case of professional misconduct against the lawyer.

“The Human Rights Committee of the NBA will also be looking into the incident with a view to supporting a criminal investigation and prosecution.

“We will update our members and the public.

“Without prejudice to the eventual outcome of the investigation, the NBA condemns in unequivocal terms any form of violence against person, including domestic violence. And our secretariats across our 128 branches are open to receive and act on such complaints by victims,” the statement reads.
