  • Nigeria ranks among the countries with the highest visa refusal rates globally, largely due to avoidable errors made during applications.

Nigeria is currently among the countries with the highest rate of visa refusals worldwide, and experts say many of these rejections come from simple, preventable mistakes made during the application process.

Below are seven of the most frequent errors — and the steps applicants can take to avoid them:

1. Inconsistent or Incorrect Application Details

Tiny mistakes such as spelling errors, wrong dates of birth or mismatched passport numbers instantly raise red flags for visa officers.

Fix: Copy every detail directly from your passport and double-check all entries before submitting.

2. Weak or Unverifiable Proof of Funds

Submitting one-page balances, accounts with sudden unexplained deposits or poor financial history often leads to automatic refusal.

Fix: Provide 3–6 months of valid bank statements, payslips and sponsor documents showing steady financial activity.

3. Poor Evidence of Ties to Nigeria

Visa officers must be convinced that an applicant will return home after the trip. Weak home-ties documentation is one of the biggest refusal factors.

Fix: Attach employment letters, CAC business documents, school enrollment, property ownership or proof of dependent family members.

4. Submitting Fake or Altered Documents

Any falsified document — bank statements, letters, certificates — results in immediate refusal and can attract long-term travel bans.

Fix: Only use genuine documents and submit through accredited centres like VFS or TLScontact.

5. Ignoring Country-Specific Requirements

Missing mandatory travel insurance, choosing the wrong embassy or skipping required documents can delay or destroy an application.

Fix: Follow the official embassy guidelines for the specific country you’re applying to.

6. No Travel History with Weak Supporting Evidence

First-time travellers face extra scrutiny, and weak files make approval even more difficult.

Fix: Strengthen your application with a clear itinerary, strong financial proof and documents showing you must return to Nigeria.

7. Reapplying Without Fixing the Previous Refusal Reason

Re-submitting the same weak documents guarantees another rejection.

Fix: Carefully read the refusal letter, address every issue raised and add stronger supporting evidence before reapplying.
