President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in a bid to address the challenges in Nigeria’s health sector has declared a state of emergency.

VerseNews gathered that this was made known at the 64th National Council on Health, convening in Ekiti State which provided the opportunity for stakeholders to address salient matters in the country’s health sector.

The ceremony which began on Thurday provided an opportunity to establish an atmosphere based on the theme of creating a resilient and comprehensive healthcare system for a healthy Nigeria.

Dr Muhammed Ali Pate, the Coordinating Minister for Health and Social Welfare, declared that the state of health facilities in the nation is not good, and that an immediate response is required.

Biodun Oyebanji, the Governor of Ekiti State, expressed his enthusiasm at the prospect of welcoming distinguished health policy delegates from across Nigeria and the world to the 64th National Council on Health in his home state.

This council meeting, he said, promised to be a momentous event in the history of the state. He proclaimed that the state has accomplished remarkable feats in the health area in recent years.

Last month, the House of Representatives urged the Federal Government to proclaim a state of emergency in the sector and allocate major appropriations to it in the 2024 budget.

A Lagos legislator, Fayinka Oluwatoyin from the All Progressives Congress (APC), created a motion during a plenary session in Abuja; the call being a follow-up on it.

In the motion captioned “Need for the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency to collaborate with relevant health agencies in states and Local Governments to ensure the functionality of Primary Healthcare Centres,” the lawmaker representing Mushin Federal Constituency II of Lagos State said Nigeria’s health facilities are dilapidating at a fast rate.

He states that the growth in fatalities in health care establishments in the country is due to the ends of manpower, medical devices, medicines, and expert personnel, among other things.
